Dealing with His Delays

Dealing with His Delays

Habakuk 2:1-4

2 I will stand at my watch
and station myself on the ramparts;
I will look to see what he will say to me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint.
2 Then the Lord replied:

“Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.
3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come
and will not delay.
4 “See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness—

How do we get though difficult times? The Bible is realistic in how we are to face the struggles in life. They are to be expected, but faced with hopeful grace and patience. How are we to deal with his delays?

1. Patiently wait for God’s best

Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come

The word for wait men's “be patient”. It means don’t give up or despair- be patient for God’s best. In the midst of difficulties, instead of giving up- be patient in your circumstances.

Patience comes from a deliberate act of humility. James 4: “you do not know what will happen tomorrow, instead you should say ‘if it’s God’s will…”

When things go wrong, we think of our worry and fear- those feelings arise out of an assumption of our own self omniscience. Lay down the burden of self omniscience. You are freaking out because you believe you know what you cannot know.

Patience comes from a savvy decision for your own personal growth. The people I know with the best prayer lives are people who have been though suffering.

Consider it pure joy my brothers when you face trials of many kinds…

When you meet life’s disappointment with patience it turns you into a person of character. Pressure turns a lump of coal into diamonds.

2. Rely on the longer view

2 I will stand at my watch
and station myself on the ramparts;

Put your problems in the perspective of all that God is doing in your life though eternity. Put your present situation I the perspective of eternity

18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18)

Trust in His word

“I will stand at my watch”

The guard never leaves his post. It doesn’t matter if you are tired, bored or unmotivated, a true soldier never leaves the post.

Habakuk is confused and upset at what God has told him but he will not leave his post. He continued to trust and obey.

Waiting on the Lord means that even when you don’t feel like it, you still serve the Lord. When you are filled with self pity you stop trying. Some people stop going to church , small group, prayer life. So what if your not getting anything out of it- will you quit?

Martin Lloyd Jones: Received a letter from someone saying “I get nothing out of praying”. He wrote back “I can tell you will get nothing out of not praying. If you get nothing out of daily going to the throne of grace, I can assure you will never get anything out of not going.”

4. Deny yourself

Learn to be faithful to God even when you are getting nothing out of it at all.

5. Set your mind on the joy to come

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why is obedience important when we are waiting on God?
  2. How does trusting God require patience?
  3. Why do you believe our hardships make us more mature and complete?
  4. Why is it important to look at our struggles through the perspective of eternity?
  5. Why is it important to obey God even when we don’t feel like it?
